Standing out to employers today looks different than it did just a few years ago. Tasks that once formed the foundation of entry-level finance roles are increasingly being automated, meaning employers are placing even greater value on professionals who can analyse information, solve problems, and support better decision-making.

The numbers are still essential, but they’re just one part of the job.

“Finance is no longer just about producing numbers — it’s about interpreting them and supporting decisions. As [artificial intelligence] and automation take on routine tasks, the value sits in context, judgement, and action,” said  Stephen Flatman, Vice President of Education & Professional Qualifications at CIMA® .

As the profession evolves, professionals need both strong financial skills and critical-thinking abilities to analyse trends, solve problems, and offer recommendations. These skills,  aptly termed power skills in CIMA research , are the foundation to staying relevant as AI continues to disrupt the profession. These are also the skills employers look for when identifying future leaders and deciding who is ready for greater responsibility.

Skills that grow across your career

Developing power skills early can make you stand out in a competitive job market and demonstrate potential beyond technical expertise. Explore  why power skills matter for today’s management accountants .

Start establishing your power skills now, and they’ll continue to develop throughout your career. They're essential for adaptability, flexibility, confidence, and building a career that remains valuable as roles, technologies, and employer expectations evolve.

“If you can understand context, challenge information, and make decisions, you can move across roles, industries, and changing expectations much more easily”, said Flatman.

Power skills are as important as technical ability, and that’s why  the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA®) Professional Qualification   builds both. You’ll develop in-demand leadership skills alongside business and financial expertise, helping you become a trusted contributor to any organisation.

The most valuable skills aren’t being automated

A lot of the recent changes in the profession can be traced back to AI and the automation of routine work.

As a management accountant, you will always be needed because of your integrity, ethics, and judgement. Your ability to prepare reports and process data is paired with the ability to identify risks, recommend actions, and help leaders make better decisions. You use your expertise to turn information into action.

“Put simply, AI is redefining what ‘good’ looks like in finance,” said Flatman. “Entry-level roles in finance are shifting. What used to be focused on processing and reporting is now moving towards analysis, insight, and strategy much earlier in a career.”

The tools are changing, but the need for sound communication and critical thinking is not.

“The ability to think, adapt, and apply judgement travels with you. Those are the skills that remain relevant, regardless of how roles evolve,” said Flatman.

Whilst specific technologies, systems, and processes will continue to change, being able to analyse situations, communicate effectively, and exercise sound judgement will remain valuable throughout your career. These are the skills that keep you relevant, whether you're stepping into your first role, moving into leadership, or adapting to new ways of working.

Power skills: Designed for long-term success

Technical skills get your foot in the door. Power skills show employers that you're ready for what's required at the next level. The CGMA qualification combines both, building your finance expertise whilst strengthening critical thinking and business skills that make you a trusted professional.

“That’s the intent behind [the CGMA qualification],” said Flatman. “It’s not just about your first job; it’s about building the thinking skills that support progression across an entire career.”

Thanks to power skills, the qualification is rooted in long-term capability — preparing you for a successful career, not just your first role. Practice and develop these skills now and discover how the  CGMA qualification   builds power skills further.
