Studying with CIMA

Lutic Mosoane, ACMA, CBAP, CGMA, started his career in internal auditing but felt a pull toward entrepreneurship and then management accounting — “the kind of finance that does not merely report on the past but actively shapes the future of organisations.”

The means for transforming his career into management accounting and strategic finance leadership was earning a qualification. He started the Chartered Global Management Accountant® (CGMA®) qualification programme in 2023 and finished in 2025.

Lutic sees how the qualification supports his work at his company Winsome Africa, based in Pretoria, South Africa. But he also sees how the qualification supports activities beyond finance.

“I am simultaneously a consultant, an entrepreneur developing a fintech product, a board member, [a Master of Science] student, a football [coach], and a community leader,” he said. “The CIMA framework with its emphasis on strategic management, risk, and performance underpins every one of those roles. It is not a qualification that confines you to a single lane; it equips you to lead across multiple domains.”

Achieving a recognised qualification strengthens your credibility and equips you with the resiliency to stay effective, trusted, and forward-looking.

Credibility: Strengthening reliability and objectiveness

Lutic’s experience performing internal audits gave him exposure to governance and operating within regulatory frameworks. He wanted to expand not only his skills but also elevate his credibility in different workplace scenarios.

In environments where decisions carry significant financial and strategic consequences, credibility is critical. Credibility strengthens decision-making and protects organizational reputation.

A trusted qualification, like CGMA, is also a signal that you’re capable of leading high-profile projects or holding committee positions. “The CGMA [qualification] … has given me the language of credibility that transcends borders and sectors,” said Lutic, who has been appointed to several audit committee positions and serves as a community leader. “When I engage with clients … the [qualification] signals a global standard of competence that opens doors.”

Building resiliency through challenges

Lutic’s resilience increased when it took him several attempts to pass an exam as part of his qualification process.

“Each attempt taught me something about resilience, about integrating strategic thinking under pressure, and about the kind of persistence that defines a CGMA [professional],” he said. Lessons learned from the experience can be applied directly to his company.

Resiliency comes in handy when managing competing priorities. Responsibilities of performance analysis, budget cycles, forecasting, strategic planning often overlap. Resilience maintains productivity without burning out.

And resilient professionals lead through organisational change. They not only cope themselves but also lead others.

A qualification that fosters credibility, resilience, and in-demand skills

The CGMA qualification builds the credibility and resiliency management accountants need to become trusted, adaptable professionals who can tackle any challenge. The CGMA qualification is an ideal next step for anyone seeking global recognition, high earnings potential, career progression, or advanced financial knowledge.

“Pursuing the CGMA [qualification] was my investing in a [qualification] l that would not only elevate my own practice but enable me to serve my clients, my community, and ultimately the African continent with the highest standard of financial leadership,” said Lutic.

Built with busy professionals in mind, there are flexible pathways that recognise your experience — flexibility that was critical for Lutic, who chose the CFO Programme. “The CFO [programme] … honoured the work I had already done while setting the bar for what I should aspire to going forward.”
