Carla Rossini, FCMA, CGMA, does not consider herself a “technically brilliant accountant.” She admitted she failed maths repeatedly in school.

“But I like people and I’m intrigued by people,” explained Carla in a video. “I’m curious about what people are trying to achieve.”

This curiosity lends itself well to her career in finance and accounting. Combined with a big-picture way of thinking, Carla uses financial data to connect the dots, solve problems, and help organisations achieve their business goals.

Carla started her career as an internal auditor and, now, she’s CEO at LEA Global in Edinburgh. She’s an example of how career progression in finance comes from the ability to connect people, performance, and insights.

“Numbers is a tiny fraction of [being an accountant,]” said Carla. “So much of it is about people. It’s about people, technology, business [and] understanding culture.”

Management accountants do more than produce numbers — they’re business partners who shape decisions and strategy and use those numbers to influence decisions.

Bridging the gap between reporting and strategy

Reporting explains what has happened, while strategy focuses on what should happen next. Management accountants bridge the two by:

  • Interpreting data, not just presenting it
  • Influencing decisions, not just documenting them
  • Shaping strategy, not just measuring performance

This makes management accountants storytellers, analysts, and strategic partners — and that’s the foundation of the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA®) qualification. The globally recognised programme is designed for professionals to advance knowledge in finance, operations, strategy, management, and more.

“[The qualification] is part of your CV. It’s recognition that you’ve achieved something of a certain standard and quality that employers recognise,” said Carla. “And it’s helpful in your career.”

Throughout a workday, a management accountant actively shapes decisions and strategies in many ways. The forecasting models they build are forward-looking, enabling leaders to choose the right path. Thorough cost-structure analysis creates value and influences business design. Management accountants set prices that reflect cost behaviour and evaluate long-term investments.

To extend beyond reporting results, you need a combination of honed technical finance skills, business acumen, digital literacy, technological comfort, and leadership strategy. This blend ensures you’re increasingly involved in shaping decisions and organisational direction.

The power of connecting people, performance, and insight

Technical, financial, and leadership skills may open the door for management accountants, but your unique ability to connect people, performance, and insights is what accelerates careers and elevates your impact. It’s an example of how management accountants turn numbers into understanding and understanding into action.

This connection accelerates careers by making a management accountant indispensable to leaders and by demonstrating your ability to see the business as a whole. When data is translated into clear guidance, you become the person nonfinance colleagues turn to for clarity and advice.

Anyone can report on KPIs, but fewer professionals can explain current performance trends and offer improvements.

CGMA: A path for business-minded finance professionals

Because of their diverse skill sets, bookkeepers, tax advisers, analysts, and auditors can go far in finance careers.

“Whatever you’re interested in, finance touches every single aspect of an organisation,” said Carla. “Don’t think it’s just about sitting down with numbers day in and day out. You have an opportunity to have a genuine impact on where an organisation goes.”

Management accountants stand out because they’re genuinely interested in their organisation’s internal financial health and overall success. That’s why the CGMA qualification is a strong fit for anyone seeking a career in business and finance. The qualification supports the development of finance professionals who contribute meaningfully to organisational success.

As your financial knowledge and business insight grow, so does your ability to drive value and influence strategic decision-making.

View the business as a whole and connect people, performance, and insight — launch your career with the CGMA qualification. The career platform, MyFuture, connects you to first-person stories, insights into accounting roles, guidance on building in-demand skills, and so much more.

Automation in accounting

Imagine working in a finance team where you don’t have to do any admin. Where gathering data for reports, and even the financial reporting itself, is done by robots. No, it’s not the plot to a (not very exciting) movie on Netflix: it’s the future of…
