Everyone reacts to stress differently, so it’s important to learn a variety of coping mechanisms to find what works for you. Here are 10 stress management tools for your toolbox.

1. Get quality sleep.

Lack of sleep can increase feelings of stress, so do what you can to get some quality ZZZs. Good sleeping habits help keep the immune system in check, reduce anxiety, and regulate hormone levels.

2. Eat a varied diet.

Stress increases the body’s demand for oxygen, energy, and nutrients, and eating meals that are rich in healthy fats, fruits, vegetables, and fibre gives your body the fuel it needs to help cope with stressful events. Whilst frozen entrées and takeout meals have their place, the art of cooking can also be deeply therapeutic.

3. Seek a mental health professional.

There’s nothing wrong with asking for help and finding a mental health professional. Working with a therapist can help you identify your stressors, unpack stressful situations, and help you identify healthy coping skills and self-care activities.

4. Work up a sweat.

Exercise lets you take your mind off your worries and helps you channel that energy into a physical task. Running, lifting weights, or partaking in a fitness class you love are ways to relieve tension, anxiety, and anger.

5. Meditate and learn grounding breath work.

Used for thousands of years, meditation is a tool that can help re-establish inner peace. As you mediate, jumbled thoughts are quieted, and you can better focus on the present moment. Adding in deep breaths signals to the brain to calm down and relax.

6. Take breaks regularly.

Whether short 10-minute work breaks or weekends with no scheduled plans, taking breaks can help you switch off, refocus, and recharge.

7. Get a pet.

Pets provide more than fuzzy companionship. They can help reduce loneliness, provide support, decrease stress levels, and boost moods. If resources and your schedule allow, consider getting a pet or volunteering at a local animal rescue.

8. Listen to music.

Cranking up the tunes can provide some great stress-relieving benefits. Listening to music promotes overall health whether it’s pumping you up or mellowing you out. Find some songs that boost your mood and tune out.

9. Laugh.

Laughter is not a cure-all from stress but having a good chuckle can provide some short-term benefits and put a smile on your face. Laughter soothes tension and lessens your stress response.

10. Find a career you love.

Your current job or career path may not be the best long-term fit, and it could be adding to your stress.
