We offer six different elite gateways to the CGMA designation, depending on the region where you live, including three experiential gateways and three academic gateways. Note that entry via an elite gateway requires a review of your career history to date to ensure you meet the specific requirements. Read on to discover which route might be right for you.
Experiential Gateways
You have accumulated valuable knowledge during your career, and you deserve to skip ahead in your studies. Previously, CGMA candidates could only unlock exemptions based on qualifications, but now your hard-earned experience could secure you a fast-track pass to earning a globally recognised mark of excellence. Depending on Experiential Gateways offered in your region, those with four or more years of professional experience in accounting, finance and business can apply for an expedited path to earn the CGMA designation.
- Professional Gateway: If you have four or more years of experience in accounting, finance and business, you can enter the CGMA syllabus at the Operational Level. Upon completion of the Operational Level, you will continue to the Management and Strategic Levels.
- Senior Executive Programme: If you have six or more years of senior experience in accounting, finance and business, you may begin at the Management Level. Once you complete the Management Level, you will continue to the Strategic Level.
- CFO Programme: If you are a CFO, CEO or other C-suite executive with 10 years of senior strategic experience in accounting, finance and business, you may begin by sitting the Strategic Level Case Study Exam.
Once you complete the Strategic Level and submit your practical experience requirements (PER) for approval, you will be awarded the CGMA designation and become a CIMA member.
Academic Gateways
You are an experienced lecturer, professor or researcher who has been preparing the next generation of accounting and finance professionals. Accounting or business degree holders in certain regions with three or more years of teaching or research experience in management accounting can apply for an expedited path to earn the CGMA designation.
- Academic Bachelor’s Gateway: If you have a bachelor’s degree in accounting or business and three years of teaching or research experience in management accounting, you may begin by sitting the Management Level Case Study Exam. Once you pass the exam, you will move on to the Strategic Level.
- Academic Master’s Gateway: If you have a master’s degree in accounting or business and five years of teaching or research experience in management accounting, you may enter at the Strategic Level to complete the required assessments and the Strategic Level Case Study Exam.
- Elite Academics Programme: If you have a PhD in accounting or business and six years of teaching or research experience in management accounting, you may begin by sitting the Strategic Level Case Study Exam.
Depending on Academic Gateways offered in your region, once you complete the Strategic Level and submit your relevant academic experience for approval, you will be awarded the CGMA designation and can go on to become a CIMA member.
